The British Computer Association of the Blind is dedicated to opening up the world of information technology to blind and partially- sighted people of all ages and abilities, assisting IT professionals, students and employed people who need to use computers at work, unemployed people who need to obtain skills and supporting home users who want to use email, the Web, online shopping and other digital technologies.
Its EyeT4All project provides small groups of newly visually-impaired people with a hands-on day using a computer, at a local venue free of charge, to show them what IT can do for them and how it can improve the quality of their lives. The Trust has now funded an extension of this project to give expert advice to them when they have returned home.
It will be provided by volunteers via a remote incident management system, similar to those used by companies such as Dell or BT Yahoo to provide technical support. In addition, mutual support will be provided by creating an on-line EyeT4All community discussion forum to allow those who have attended an awareness day to discuss how they are getting on with their computer.
