Shaun's Game Academy
In May 2014, Nominet Trust partnered with Aardman Animations, the creator of Shaun the Sheep, to launch Shaun’s Game Academy, a national competition for young people to build online games based on the adventures of the popular TV character.
The collaboration aimed to give children the opportunity to develop critical skills by appealing to their interests in gaming, animation and popular culture. The competition gave young users a suite of characters, backgrounds and effects from the stop-motion animation series to create simple, fun and exciting games using the Scratch coding platform.
Shaun's Game Academy ran from September 2014 until March 2015; really sparking the imaginations of Shaun fans who showed off their creativity in some amazing Shaun the Sheep games. Using the Scratch game-making platform the competition participants displayed both a fantastic grasp of coding and skill at creating really addictive challenges that make you want to play again and again!
The competition was judged by experts including Dan Pearce, BAFTA Young Game Designer Winner, Laura Kirsop, Head of Code Club UK, and Ricky Martin, presenter of CBBC programme Art Ninja, as well as representatives from both Aardman and Nominet Trust.
With some truly original ideas to choose from, the judges had a pretty tricky time picking their winners, but after much deliberation, the following entrants were selected – Huge congratulations to all!
Under 13 Category - Pop the Balloons by PuppyWuppy 10
A colourful, easy-to-pick up game that the judges thought made a great game for younger players. It's quick to get the hang of but becomes more challenging as more and more balloons are launched at you, and features a whopping 25 levels!
Over 13 Category - Shaun the Sheep: Run, Chase, Go! by Skelekey
A classic chase challenge, this colourful entry allows you to pick your favourite character and has a great soundtrack and cool sound effects. Drive either a quad bike or the Pigs' car and avoid a variety of obstacles, from trees to logs and pot holes as you try to reach the finish line. Lots of thought and clever detail (such as exhaust fumes coming out of the vehicles) has gone into this game - a very worthy winner!
Family Category - Melli's Mushrooom Maths by Lem12
A beautiful game with an educational element. Set in a forest, complete with birdsong soundtrack, you play a character called Melli who must answer increasingly difficult sums to gain points. You can also pick up mushrooms and toadstools to gain bonus points. The judges were really impressed with Lea and Jens' coding skills, as well as their creation of a really attractive game environment.
The lucky winners will receive some amazing prizes, including the chance to visit Aardman HQ, watch a movie in the private cinema and try their hand a model making. The winner of the under 13 category will also get to spend an afternoon with Aardman's team of game designers to learn some tricks of the trade and put the final touches to their game!
