We won’t stop until we’re listened to

Inspire Nottingham supports and runs activities for people with learning disabilities. When members reported that they feel invisible and that people assume they don’t know anything and treat them like children they started coming up with ideas to get their views heard.

Over the next few months with Media Trust’s support they will be taking part in film and photography training and thinking about the messages they want people to hear. more >

A personal reflection from the UK’s first mental health Innovation Lab.

On December 10^th I had the massive privilege of working at an Innovation Lab in central London, with fifty or so of the most innovative people I’ve met in years. The chance to combine innovation, technology, and mental health is never something I can resist. The opportunity to work with a mix of outstanding, articulate, exceptional and gifted young people and a range of tech people, problem solvers, and facilitators was both humbling and exciting.

This story starts back in April, when I facilitated a workshop day on behalf of Comic Relief, Nominet Trust and Paul Hamlyn Foundation to consider ways in which young people and technology people might be brought together to co-produce a set of prototype ideas for mental health and technology assets. That day brought together young people, three of the UK’s leading grant funders, and a range of third sector organisations using technology in relation to mental health and or youth work. more >

Introducing Celebration 2.0

I am extremely pleased, and not a little proud, to announce the launch of a new project. Celebration 2.0 is funded by the Nominet Trust, and I will be delivering the project in collaboration with Talk About Local.

The genesis of Celebration 2.0 was the #twicket inititiative that I ran on Easter Monday 2011 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twicket). There were three very important lessons that came out of #twicket:

"Fun" events can achieve large scale, global audiences online and attract mainstream media attention;
People who previously had seen no use for new technologies in their lives radically changed their attitudes as a result of being involved in an event that was enhanced by technology;
Serious messages can be conveyed to large audiences engaged by their interest in the fun nature of the event.

A place you can turn to for help

Last time you had a problem where did you turn for help? Was it friends? An organisation? Your local library or Citizen’s Advice Bureau? Or was it the internet? Well apparently more and more of us are turning to the internet to find solutions to problems in our lives.

Last year the Telegraph reported that 9 in 10 young people will look for help on the internet before they ask their parents. Perhaps a more extreme example; following the disastrous earthquake in Japan earlier this year the internet was an invaluable way of sharing and consuming information and even finding missing loved ones, as Discovery News reported.

It is no surprise then that a group of people with disabilities in Wales have realised that the internet may be a great way of supporting local people with disabilities. more >
