Since our training day last December, much has been happening on Gransnet Local. The sites are filling up rapidly with listings and we've been pleased to note that even the sites that aren't yet being managed by editors are acquiring occasional business entries.

The technical glitches are all being ironed out and the site is fully operational now and ready for business. We are ready for launch!

The Oxford Internet Survey has begun data collection. The survey, which is the most comprehensive survey of British Internet use, began collection of the data for the 2013 wave on 1 February. About 2,600 respondents will be asked some 330 questions concerning the different things they do on the Internet, the devices they use, their attitudes toward the Internet and technology, and many other items. There are items about social isolation, disabiled access, education, employment, local communities, and other issues of interest to the Nominet Trust. more >

Looking to the future

In a flourishing digital era, some people may find it difficult to believe that so many people still struggle to get themselves online. Smart phones, andriod tablets and Pc's continue to drop in price and it may seem that everyone in the street owns one. Unfortunately for many people living in areas most affected by deprivation, the need of the internet and the knowledge of how to use such an extensive tool can be lacking and other needs take priority.

Connect - helping older people to get online

The Connect project has been running at GRCC in Gloucestershire since April 2011. The aim of the project is to get people 55 years or older online. So far we have helped over 350 people with a team of volunteers who have visited people at thier homes or in community buildings during group sessions. more >

Making progress on digital inclusion and digital engagement

With over three quarters of people online at home and nearly half of people using the internet on their smartphones, we expect the Government to keep up – and online public services to be both accessible and engaging.

For government to provide online services for all citizens is challenging to say the least. Especially considering both the 5.4 million people aged 65 and older who, for whatever reason, are offline - and unemployed young people – where internet use and familiarity with technology is typically high, but the digital channel is not being used to its full potential.
