Connect - helping older people to get online

The Connect project has been running at GRCC in Gloucestershire since April 2011. The aim of the project is to get people 55 years or older online. So far we have helped over 350 people with a team of volunteers who have visited people at thier homes or in community buildings during group sessions. more >

How to Build an eLearning Platform in 7 Easy (and Cheap) Steps

This week sees the start of my Digital Assistant Academy which will train 18 low income women from diverse backgrounds in new media skills. After a small pilot last winter funded by www.unltd.org.uk , I was lucky enough to get further funding from Nominet Trust to run the Academy again, and this time, to try a blended learning approach, combining on and offline learning.

Well first things first, a quick plug: today we launch the third and final subject for our iKnowHow wiki project; giving you complete access to all of our material on commissioning and procurement.

So, back to the issue of this blog: how to strike the right balance between creating a good reading experience and making it obvious that a wiki guide is editable? After all, most people come to our site to read information and advice – they don’t want their reading experience interrupted by big edit buttons and menus. However, wikis thrive with lots of editorial input – it needs to be obvious that people can edit them (and easy for them to do so). more >

I found a very interesting article this week that I would like to share with you all. It's called ‘the nine reasons why women don’t edit Wikipedia’, published in 2010 by Sue Gardner, responding to a New York Times article that revealed, that 'less than 15% of Wikipedia's hundreds of thousands of contributors are women' (reduced to 9% in 2011). A startling statistic that immediately caught my attention and had already been a topic of conversation at NCVO HQ during earlier research before we launched iKnowHow. more >

iKnowHow: building a wiki for the voluntary sector (part three) - Are we ready?

In my last post I talked about how popular – and common – wikis are on the web. But why aren’t there any for the voluntary sector? Surely they don’t only work when people are talking about the Muppets or Star Wars? I liked the comment posted on the last blog: surely the culture of volunteering in the voluntary sector would make us, as a group, ideal candidates for maintaining successful wikis?

There are two clear trends we’ve noticed at KnowHow, which suggest the time might be right for us all to embrace wiki collaboration as a form of learning how to do our jobs better.
