The 'Connect' projects helps older carers

GRCC has been successfully running the Connect project since April 2011 with funding from the Nominet Trust. The aim of the project is to help anyone over the age of 55 and living in Gloucestershire to use a computer and get ‘online.’ Connect aims to help people, especially those living in the more rural areas of the county at whatever their level of ability and experience, to become more confident in using a computer and the internet.

The Connect project has been running at GRCC in Gloucestershire since April 2011. The aim of the project is to get people 55 years or older online. So far we have helped over 350 people with a team of volunteers who have visited people at thier homes or in community buildings during group sessions. more >

A pipeline of prospects is being built; interest from local authorities, housing associations, charities and health and social care organisations. Conversion is another matter considering the climate. There is competition - Rally Round, Caucus, Jointly, Know your own Health, etc. - however; Tyze's end-user focus has a more B2C look ‘n’ feel and the responsive, user-led developments should keep it one step ahead. more >

A place you can turn to for help

Last time you had a problem where did you turn for help? Was it friends? An organisation? Your local library or Citizen’s Advice Bureau? Or was it the internet? Well apparently more and more of us are turning to the internet to find solutions to problems in our lives.

Last year the Telegraph reported that 9 in 10 young people will look for help on the internet before they ask their parents. Perhaps a more extreme example; following the disastrous earthquake in Japan earlier this year the internet was an invaluable way of sharing and consuming information and even finding missing loved ones, as Discovery News reported.

It is no surprise then that a group of people with disabilities in Wales have realised that the internet may be a great way of supporting local people with disabilities. more >
