Social Media for Voluntary Organisations

We've been running a social media programme to help voluntary organisations to set up and implement a social media strategy. The key learning that has come from the programme is the benefit that has come from delivering hands on support over 2 x 3 hours sessions with each client.

Firming up personal relationships with shared video

For housebound individuals, conventional communication media can prove limiting and lacking in rich conversational opportunities.

But now, researchers at the University of Nottingham have found that what communicating partners need to really stimulate such remote conversations is the chance to build on a regular and vivid shared experience. And they are hoping that their latest development project will provide just such an experience.

With support from Nominet Trust, the Shared Walk project aims to ultimately enable isolated individuals to engage with and explore alongside, albeit virtually, the travels and changing settings of a mobile, conversational partner.

One year in, Charles Crook explains where they are with the project.

The Shared Walk project has now implemented an active internet service that allows relatively isolated individuals to enjoy vivid communication with their carers, relatives, friends or other volunteer support individuals. more >

The rollercoaster ride of Celebration 2.0

I suppose it’s fitting for a project that’s about celebration that I’ve found Celebration 2.0 to be something of a rollercoaster ride, to use a terribly hackneyed cliché. From Roller Derbies to the launch of a Community Health project, I’ve been part of some really diverse events, helping to bring them to wider audiences through live video streaming and social media amplification. And, as the project nears its last lap, it’s pretty much time to reflect on some of the lessons I’ve learned so far.

Well first things first, a quick plug: today we launch the third and final subject for our iKnowHow wiki project; giving you complete access to all of our material on commissioning and procurement.

So, back to the issue of this blog: how to strike the right balance between creating a good reading experience and making it obvious that a wiki guide is editable? After all, most people come to our site to read information and advice – they don’t want their reading experience interrupted by big edit buttons and menus. However, wikis thrive with lots of editorial input – it needs to be obvious that people can edit them (and easy for them to do so). more >

iKnowHow: building a wiki for the voluntary sector (part four)

Today I am blogging from the NCVO conference where we've given a sneak preview of iKnowHow to all attendees.

Stuart Etherington, CEO of NCVO mentioned our project in his State of the Sector address. He said: ‘we believe that this will enable people in the sector to share their knowledge and expertise like never before’. A real vote of confidence and optimism in an otherwise tough speech.

We've talked to lots of people today and been able to explain what iKnowHow is about. It's been really great to hear that those in the voluntary sector are as excited as we are. more >

iKnowHow: building a wiki for the voluntary sector (part three) - Are we ready?

In my last post I talked about how popular – and common – wikis are on the web. But why aren’t there any for the voluntary sector? Surely they don’t only work when people are talking about the Muppets or Star Wars? I liked the comment posted on the last blog: surely the culture of volunteering in the voluntary sector would make us, as a group, ideal candidates for maintaining successful wikis?

There are two clear trends we’ve noticed at KnowHow, which suggest the time might be right for us all to embrace wiki collaboration as a form of learning how to do our jobs better.
