The 'Connect' projects helps older carers

GRCC has been successfully running the Connect project since April 2011 with funding from the Nominet Trust. The aim of the project is to help anyone over the age of 55 and living in Gloucestershire to use a computer and get ‘online.’ Connect aims to help people, especially those living in the more rural areas of the county at whatever their level of ability and experience, to become more confident in using a computer and the internet.

Whilst traditional employment opportunities are decreasing, young people are increasingly more prepared to take risks, embrace digital technology, and consider entrepreneurial employment opportunities. The Oxford Internet Survey has begun data collection. The survey, which is the most comprehensive survey of British Internet use, began collection of the data for the 2013 wave on 1 February. About 2,600 respondents will be asked some 330 questions concerning the different things they do on the Internet, the devices they use, their attitudes toward the Internet and technology, and many other items. There are items about social isolation, disabiled access, education, employment, local communities, and other issues of interest to the Nominet Trust. more >

Changing the world through social action

Last weekend was a big weekend for us. We put superheroes, techy developers, lay office types and a bunch of cool young people in a room and gave them the power to change the world through social action. Luckily for us, they knew how!

The venue: very generously donated by Forward Foundation, also came with the sharp mind of Sam, a developer there to make sure we keep a link to reality.

Making a Difference

Our Digital Inclusion Through Schools (DITS) intergenerational project is based in a predominantly rural area where access to services is difficult, particularly for older people. Access to the internet can really enhance the lives of people in later life and we aim through our project to increase the number of older 'Silver Surfers' . We are working with local schools and the library service who allow us to use their facilities free of charge. The pupils at the schools become the 'Tutors' and they work on a one to one basis with the older people who are the 'Pupils. more >
