Ami: an innovative tool to tackle loneliness
Loneliness can seriously damage your health: research shows that a lack of social connection is as dangerous as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. And all too often it’s older people who are isolated and lonely. They can feel invisible, despite the fact there are often neighbours living nearby who would happily offer them some help and companionship.
Ami, from Oxford Computer Consultants, is an innovative new online matching platform providing a simple way for these two groups to connect, and combat loneliness in local communities.
Ending social isolation
Through Ami, older people can post the specific assistance they need online via the voluntary organisation that supports them. Volunteers can then search their local postcode and identify who to help. The process is secure at every stage: volunteers are interviewed and DBS checked before being introduced by the voluntary organisation.
Funding from Nominet Trust will help pay for a pilot in Oxfordshire to perfect an innovative platform that can bring people together online to tackle loneliness in the real world.
