Mind Of My Own

Making it easier for young people in and leaving care to express their views.

At MOMO we believe that young people using services should be able to participate fully in their care and it should be easy for them to speak up at any time they choose and to be heard.

"Mind Of My Own would never have got off the ground without such a great start from Nominet Trust. We will continue to develop the MOMO apps and scale the project further"

The challenge

Children and young people using health, care and education services often find it difficult to say what they want and need. Yet we know that better care happens when children are better listened to. Nominet Trust funded the creation of an app to help young people increase their control of the processes involved in using health, care and education services.

The aim of the project

The first app to be developed, MOMO One, allows young people to say what is going well, what they want to change and how they wish to plan for significant events in their lives. By helping them tell their worker what they really think, they can receive more personalised support and build more sustainable, trusting and effective relationships with professionals.

Positive outcomes

Over 60 services across the British Isles now use MOMO, and in 2017 the team released a new app called MOMO Express that makes it easier for children with a learning disability to express their views. The apps are updated with new features every six weeks. MOMO has been trialled successfully in New Zealand and interest has been expressed in Australia, Lithuania and Denmark. For the fourth year in a row, MOMO apps have been recognised by the Children & Young People Now Awards –winning in 2014, Highly Commended in 2015 and 2016, and shortlisted in 2017. Other awards include being named a New Radical by Nesta and the Observer in 2016 and listed in the top 100 digital influencers of local government by Public in 2017.
